3. The Noble Descent
4. “Mendicants, I will teach you the noble descent.
5. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”
6. “Yes, sir,” they replied.
7. The Buddha said this:
8. “And what, mendicants, is the noble descent?
9. It’s when a noble disciple reflects:
10. ‘Killing living creatures has a bad result
11. in the present life and in lives to come.’
12. Reflecting like this, they give up killing living creatures,
13. they descend from killing living creatures.
14. … ‘Stealing has a bad result
15. in the present life and in lives to come.’
16. Reflecting like this, they give up stealing,
17. they descend from stealing.
18. … ‘Sexual misconduct has a bad result …’ …
19. they descend from sexual misconduct.
20. … ‘Lying has a bad result …’ …
21. they descend from lying.
22. … ‘Divisive speech has a bad result …’ …
