4. “Mendicants, there are ten drawbacks to entering a royal compound.
5. What ten?
6. Firstly, a king is sitting with his chief queen
7. when a monk enters.
8. When the queen sees the monk she smiles, or when the monk sees the queen he smiles.
9. So the king thinks:
10. ‘They’ve done it for sure, or they will do it.’
11. This is the first drawback of entering a royal compound.
12. Furthermore, a king has many duties, and much to do. He has sex with one of the women but doesn’t remember.
13. She gets pregnant from that.
14. So the king thinks:
15. ‘No-one else has entered here, except for that monk.
16. Could this be the monk’s doing?’
17. This is the second drawback of entering a royal compound.
18. Furthermore, a gem is lost somewhere in the royal compound.
19. So the king thinks:
20. ‘No-one else has entered here, except for that monk.
21. Could this be the monk’s doing?’
22. This is the third drawback of entering a royal compound.
23. Furthermore, secret deliberations in the royal compound are leaked outside.
24. So the king thinks:
25. ‘No-one else has entered here, except for that monk.
26. Could this be the monk’s doing?’
27. This is the fourth drawback of entering a royal compound.
28. Furthermore, in a royal compound, a father longs for their son, or a son longs for his father.
29. They think:
30. ‘No-one else has entered here, except for that monk.
31. Could this be the monk’s doing?’
32. This is the fifth drawback of entering a royal compound.
33. Furthermore, the king promotes someone to a higher position.
34. Those who are upset by this think:
35. ‘The king is close to that monk.
36. Could this be the monk’s doing?’
37. This is the sixth drawback of entering a royal compound.
38. Furthermore, the king demotes someone to a lower position.
39. Those who are upset by this think:
40. ‘The king is close to that monk.
41. Could this be the monk’s doing?’
42. This is the seventh drawback of entering a royal compound.
43. Furthermore, the king dispatches the army at the wrong time.

48. Furthermore, the king dispatches the army at the right time, but orders it to turn back while still on the road.

53. Furthermore, in the royal compound there is a trampling of elephants, horses, and chariots, as well as arousing sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches that do not befit a monk.
54. This is the tenth drawback of entering a royal compound.
