4. There Sāriputta addressed the mendicants:
5. “Reverends, mendicants!”
6. “Reverend,” they replied.
7. Sāriputta said this:
8. “Reverends, any monk or nun who sees four things inside themselves should conclude:
9. ‘My skillful qualities are declining.
10. For this is what the Buddha calls decline.’
11. What four?
12. They have much greed, much hate, and much delusion; and their wisdom eye doesn’t go into the many deep matters.
13. Any monk or nun who sees these four things inside themselves should conclude:
14. ‘My skillful qualities are declining.
15. For this is what the Buddha calls decline.’
16. Any monk or nun who sees four things inside themselves should conclude:
17. ‘My skillful qualities are not declining.
18. For this is what the Buddha calls non-decline.’
19. What four?
20. Their greed, hate, and delusion grow less; and their wisdom eye goes into the many deep matters.
21. Any monk or nun who sees these four things inside themselves should conclude:
22. ‘My skillful qualities are not declining.
23. For this is what the Buddha calls non-decline.’”
