5. “Then again when I was
6. in the capital citadel of Kāsi,
7. a sister and seven brothers
8. were born in a learned family.
9. I was the first-born of them all,
10. furnishing with pure conscience.
11. Seeing rebirth as fearful,
12. I longed for renunciation.
13. Sent for by my mother and father,
14. my friends with one mind
15. invited me to enjoy sensual pleasures, saying:
16. ‘Maintain the family lineage.’
17. The words they said
18. about the ways a householder can find happiness,
19. were hard for me to hear,
20. like a heated ploughshare.
21. When I rejected their proposal,
22. they asked me what I wished for:
23. ‘My dear, what is it that you wish,
24. since you do not long for sensual pleasures?’
25. I spoke to my beneficiaries,
26. wanting what is best.
27. ‘I wish not for the householder’s state,
28. I long for renunciation.’
29. Hearing my words,
30. they told my mother and father .
31. My parents said this:
32. ‘Sirs, let all of us go forth!’
33. So both my mother and father,
34. sister and seven brothers,
35. discarding countless riches,
36. entered the great forest.”
