4. Thoughts
5. This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
6. “Two thoughts, mendicants, often occur to the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha:
7. the thought of sanctuary, and that of seclusion.
8. The Realized One loves kindness and delights in it,
9. so this thought often occurs to him:
10. ‘Through this behavior, I shall not hurt any creature firm or frail.’
11. The Realized One loves seclusion and delights in it,
12. so this thought often occurs to him:
13. ‘What is unskillful has been given up.’
14. So, mendicants, you too should love kindness and delight in it,
15. then this thought will often occur to you:
16. ‘Through this behavior, I shall not hurt any creature firm or frail.’
17. You too should love seclusion and delight in it,
18. then this thought will often occur to you:
19. ‘What is unskillful? What is not given up? What should I give up?’”
20. The Buddha spoke this matter.
21. On this it is said:
22. “Two thoughts occur to him,
23. the Realized One, the bearer of the unbearable:
24. first mentioned was thought of sanctuary,
25. then the second made clear was seclusion.
26. Dispeller of darkness, the great seer has crossed over:
27. the attained, the master, the undefiled.
28. In the midst of it all,
    he is freed in the ending of craving;
29. that sage bears his final body.
30. He has disposed of Māra, I declare,
    and gone beyond old age.
31. Standing high on a rocky mountain,
32. you can see the people all around.
33. In just the same way, the all-seer, so intelligent,
34. having ascended the Temple of Truth,
35. rid of sorrow, looks upon the people
36. swamped with sorrow,
    oppressed by rebirth and old age.”
37. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
