4. “Those folk in the world who are stingy,
5. miserly and abusive,
6. setting up obstacles
7. for others who give.
8. What kind of result do they reap?
9. What kind of future life?
10. We’ve come to ask you, worthy sir:
11. how are we to understand this?”
12. “Those folk in the world who are stingy,
13. miserly and abusive,
14. setting up obstacles
15. for others who give:
16. they’re reborn in hell,
17. the animal realm, or Yama’s world.
18. If they return to the human state,
19. they’re born in a poor family,
20. where clothes, food, pleasure, and play
21. are hard to find.
22. They don’t even get
23. what they hope for from others.
24. This is the result in the present life,
25. and in the next, a bad destination.”
26. “We understand what you’re saying,
27. and ask another question, Gotama.
28. What about those who’ve gained the human state,
29. who are bountiful and rid of stinginess,
30. confident in the Buddha and the teaching,
31. with keen respect for the Saṅgha?
32. What kind of result do they reap?
33. What kind of future life?
34. We’ve come to ask you, worthy sir:
35. how are we to understand this?”
36. “Those who’ve gained the human state
37. who are bountiful and rid of stinginess,
38. confident in the Buddha and the teaching,
39. with keen respect for the Saṅgha:
40. they illuminate the heavens
41. wherever they’re reborn.
42. If they return to the human state,
43. they’re reborn in a rich family,
44. where clothes, food, pleasure, and play
45. are easy to find.
46. They rejoice like those
47. who control the possessions of others.
48. This is the result in the present life,
49. and in the next, a good destination.”
