4. “Seven mendicants reborn in Aviha
5. have been freed.
6. With the complete ending of greed and hate,
7. they’ve crossed over clinging to the world.”
8. “Who are those who’ve crossed the bog,
9. Death’s dominion so hard to pass?
10. Who, after leaving behind the human body,
11. have risen above celestial yokes?”
12. “Upaka and Palagaṇḍa,
13. and Pukkusāti, these three;
14. Bhaddiya and Bhaddadeva,
15. and Bāhudanti and Piṅgiya.
16. They, after leaving behind the human body,
17. have risen above celestial yokes.”
18. “You speak well of them,
19. who have let go the snares of Māra.
20. Whose teaching did they understand
21. to cut the bonds of rebirth?”
22. “None other than the Blessed One!
23. None other than your instruction!
24. It was your teaching that they understood
25. to cut the bonds of rebirth.
26. Where name and form
27. cease with nothing left over;
28. understanding this teaching,
29. they cut the bonds of rebirth.”
30. “The words you say are deep,
31. hard to understand, so very hard to wake up to.
32. Whose teaching did you understand
33. that you can say such things?”
34. “In the past I was a potter
35. in Vebhaliṅga called Ghaṭīkāra.
36. I took care of my parents
37. as a lay follower of Buddha Kassapa.
38. I refrained from sexual intercourse,
39. I was chaste, spiritual.
40. We lived in the same village;
41. in the past I was your comrade.
42. I am the one who understands
43. that these seven mendicants have been freed.
44. With the complete ending of greed and hate,
45. they’ve crossed over clinging to the world.”
46. “That’s exactly how it was,
47. just as you say, Bhaggava.
48. In the past you were a potter
49. in Vebhaliṅga called Ghaṭīkāra.
50. You took care of your parents
51. as a lay follower of Buddha Kassapa.
52. You refrained from sexual intercourse,
53. you were chaste, spiritual.
54. We lived in the same village;
55. in the past you were my comrade.”
56. That’s how it was
57. when those friends of old met again.
58. Both of them were evolved,
59. bearing their final body.
