3. With Khema
4. Standing to one side, the godling Khema recited these verses in the Buddha’s presence:
5. “Fools and simpletons behave
6. like their own worst enemies,
7. doing wicked deeds
8. that ripen as bitter fruit.
9. It’s not good to do a deed
10. that plagues you later on,
11. for which you weep and wail,
12. as its effect stays with you.
13. It is good to do a deed
14. that doesn’t plague you later on,
15. that gladdens and cheers,
16. as its effect stays with you.”
17. “As a precaution, you should do
18. what you know is for your own welfare.
19. A thinker, a wise one would not proceed
20. thinking like the cart driver.
21. Suppose a cart driver leaves the highway,
22. so even and well compacted.
23. They enter upon a rough road,
24. and fret as soon as their axle is broken.
25. So too, a dullard departs the good
26. to follow what’s against the good.
27. Fallen in the jaws of death,
28. they fret like one whose axle is broken.”
