3. With Jantu
4. So I have heard.
5. At one time several mendicants were staying in the Kosalan lands, in a wilderness hut on the slopes of the Himalayas. They were restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, loose-tongued, unmindful, lacking situational awareness and immersion, with straying minds and undisciplined faculties.
6. Then on the fifteenth day sabbath the godling Jantu went up to those mendicants and addressed them in verse:
7. “The mendicants used to live happily,
8. as disciples of Gotama.
9. Desireless they sought alms;
10. desireless they used their lodgings.
11. Knowing that the world was impermanent
12. they made an end of suffering.
13. But now they’ve made themselves hard to look after,
14. like chiefs in a village.
15. They eat and eat and then lie down,
16. passed out in the homes of others.
17. Having raised my joined palms to the Saṅgha,
18. I speak here only about certain people.
19. They’re rejects, with no protector,
20. just like those who have passed away.
21. I’m speaking about
22. those who live negligently.
23. To those who live diligently
24. I pay homage.”
