4. At Sāvatthī.
5. Then King Pasenadi of Kosala went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side.
6. Then a man went up to the king and whispered in his ear,
7. “Your Majesty, Queen Mallikā has given birth to a daughter.”
8. When this was said, King Pasenadi was disappointed.
9. Then, knowing that King Pasenadi was disappointed, on that occasion the Buddha recited these verses:
10. “Well, some women are better than men,
11. O ruler of the people.
12. Wise and virtuous, a devoted wife
13. whose mother-in-law is her queen.
14. And when she has a son,
15. he becomes a hero, O lord of the land.
16. The son of such a blessed lady
17. may even rule the realm.”
