3. Recitation
4. At one time one of the mendicants was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove.
5. Now at that time that mendicant had previously been spending too much time in recitation. But some time later they adhered to passivity and silence.
6. Not hearing the teaching, the deity haunting that forest approached that mendicant, and addressed them in verse:
7. “Mendicant, why don’t you recite
   passages of the teaching,
8. living together with other mendicants?
9. When you hear the teaching confidence grows;
10. and the reciter is praised in this very life.”
11. “I used to be enthusiastic about
    passages of the teaching,
12. so long as I’d not realized dispassion.
13. But then I realized dispassion, which the good call
14. the laying to rest by completely understanding
15. whatever is seen, heard, and thought.”
