3. Vaḍḍha’s Mother
4. “Vaḍḍha, please never ever
5. get entangled in the world.
6. My child, do not partake
7. in suffering again and again.
8. For happy dwell the sages, Vaḍḍha,
9. unstirred, their doubts cut off,
10. cooled and tamed,
11. and free of defilements.
12. Vaḍḍha, foster the path
13. that the seers have walked,
14. for the attainment of vision,
15. and for making an end of suffering.”
16. “Mother, you speak with such assurance
17. to me on this matter.
18. My dear mom, I can’t help thinking
19. that no entanglements are found in you.”
20. “Vaḍḍha, not a jot or a skerrick
21. of entanglement is found in me
22. for any conditions at all,
23. whether low, high, or middling.
24. All defilements are ended for me,
25. meditating and diligent.
26. I’ve attained the three knowledges
27. and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.”
28. “Oh so excellent was the goad
29. my mother spurred me with!
30. Owing to her compassion, she spoke
31. verses on the ultimate goal.
32. On hearing her words,
33. advised by my mother,
34. I was struck with righteous urgency
35. for the sake of sanctuary from the yoke.
36. Striving, resolute,
37. tireless all day and night,
38. urged on by my mother,
39. I realized supreme peace.
